The Alpaca Farm was inaugurated in Mitzpe Ramon by a young couple who came across alpacas and llamas in the Andes Mountains during a trip to South America. In the 1970s they decided to transport 180 of the animals to Israel via a specially equipped airplane. “The idea was to bring these special animals over for wool production, which led to the opening of the wool factory at the farm,” explains CMO of Alpaca Farm Yam Dvir. “Over time, curiosity surrounding the animals and our production grew, and our tourism sector began to develop organically, as more and more people came to visit the farm.” The site, which rests on almost 11 acres of land, is family run with a staff of over 10 people who work on the farm, in the factory and take care of the animals, of which there are around 200 alpacas, 30 llamas and 35 horses.
Accommodations
Throughout the years, the farm expanded in different stages, first with the opening of stables to provide horse riding experiences, and later into a B&B concept destination. “Guests can really experience the authentic farm life and can lend a helping hand with the animals.” Two wooden cabins named “Alpaca” and “Lama” feature a living room with dining table, equipped kitchenette with fridge, electric stove, oven and dishes, double bed, convertible sofas, private bathroom, cable TV, air conditioning and shaded porch. The Suites, named “Yael” and “Raz,” provide a double bedroom, living area with dining tables and five sofas that double as beds, equipped kitchenette, private bathroom, air-conditioning and shaded porch. An Israeli-style breakfast is served directly to guests’ doors in a cooler box.

“We also have the Studio Khan hall which sleeps up to 20 people on mattresses. It’s geared towards groups who want more of a camping experience, but with the added benefit of shelter, showers and dining facilities,” explains Dvir.

Activities
Horse riding for all ages and levels is offered across various desert trails, with the option of llama, pony and donkey rides for children. Guests can also share a picnic with a llama, partake in yoga sessions, tour the farm, weave in the Wool House, have a refreshment at the Stone Hut and shop the farm products (including hats and scarves). Additionally, various outdoor training activities are on offer, to expose guests to a number of hands-on farm experiences with the animals. Mitzpe Ramon, located approximately four kilometers from the farm, has other activities such as jeep tours, rappelling and desert hikes.

Clients & Marketing
The alpaca farm utilizes OTAs and a representative in China for marketing purposes. “We currently have around a 50 percent incoming market, mainly from the US and Europe,” outlines Dvir. “We hope to attract a higher percentage of international visitors to the farm by branching further into different markets through increased marketing efforts.”
